Discover Scott Beardsley: Unveiling the Visionary Leadership of UVA’s 10th President

Scott Beardsley has had a remarkable journey, moving from global business to education. With 25 years of experience and travels to over 40 countries, he finally decided to make a change. Education has always been close to his heart—he comes from a long line of teachers and believes in its power to change lives.

After leading leadership development at McKinsey & Company worldwide, Beardsley considered transitioning to academia. However, he faced skepticism as an unconventional candidate. Inspired, he researched academic leaders with non-traditional backgrounds for his doctoral thesis, which later became his book, “Higher Calling.”

In 2015, he became the dean of the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business. Moving his family to Pavilion I was an adventurous leap. “We didn’t know anyone when we got here,” he said, “but we wanted to immerse ourselves at the heart of the University.” Living in a UNESCO World Heritage site designed by Thomas Jefferson was a unique opportunity.

Beardsley’s roots are in rural Maine, where he grew up in a family of dairy farmers and educators. During his childhood in Alaska, he delivered newspapers in frigid temperatures. He graduated at the top of his high school class and earned an electrical engineering degree from Tufts University through a scholarship, even though it wasn’t his passion.

At McKinsey, he traveled extensively and rose quickly to senior partner, but after obtaining an MBA from MIT and a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, he shifted his focus entirely to education. Under his leadership at Darden, the school achieved top rankings in various categories and raised a whopping $632 million for faculty excellence and scholarships.

Beardsley’s family—his wife Claire, their children, and their golden retriever, Lawnie—has embraced the community at UVA. They host gatherings and he teaches seminars, nurturing the connections that come from being part of the Lawn community.

As UVA’s longest-serving dean, Beardsley was nominated to become the university’s next president. His extensive experience and dedication to UVA’s mission make him a strong candidate. He emphasizes that achieving the institution’s goals requires collaboration among students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

“What really matters is how we collectively pursue our mission,” Beardsley stated. He sees his role as empowering everyone at UVA to reach their full potential and positively impact the world. He hopes to inspire further growth and purpose at the university.

Recent surveys indicate strong support for innovative leadership and community engagement in educational settings, reflecting the changing landscape in academia. Beardsley’s vision aligns closely with these trends, promising to take UVA to new heights as he leads the institution forward.
