Scottsdale has rolled out a new trolley service to enhance community support. This service connects three key locations: the Scottsdale Food Bank, the Granite Reef Senior Center, and the Vista del Camino Community Center.
This initiative aims to improve access to vital resources, especially for seniors and those facing food insecurity. According to recent statistics from Feeding America, around 10.5% of Arizonans experienced food insecurity in 2021, highlighting the importance of services like this trolley.
Running every Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon, the trolley operates on a 30-minute loop with stops at:
- Granite Reef Senior Center (north parking lot)
- Vista del Camino Community Center (existing stop)
- Scottsdale Food Bank, at 7601 E. McKellips Road, Building C
This service was launched to accommodate the relocation of the food bank, ensuring that residents without personal transportation can still access essential support. Sue Oh, a Human Services Manager in Scottsdale, emphasized the importance of this connection. She noted, “This new trolley route helps remove transportation barriers and strengthens our ability to meet the needs of some of our community’s most vulnerable residents.”
In addition to food bank visits, the trolley helps with the Brown Bag Program, which provides fresh produce and other essentials to Scottsdale seniors. This service has transitioned from the Granite Reef Senior Center to the food bank’s new location, ensuring that seniors can continue to receive their goods without hassle.
For those in need of food assistance, residents should call Vista del Camino at 480-312-2323 to make an appointment before heading to the food bank.
This trolley not only serves as a means of transportation but also as a lifeline for many. As communities strive to tackle food insecurity, services like these illustrate the importance of accessible resources for vulnerable groups.
