The Maine Art Gallery in Wiscasset highlights the beauty of its surroundings, making it a special place for artists. The rugged coastline and serene woods inspire creativity and imagination. In 2026, the gallery is focusing on how artists connect with nature and the importance of sustainable agriculture in Maine.
The season kicks off on May 7 with “Art to Table: Visual Sustenance.” This juried exhibition looks at how food connects us as individuals and communities. It showcases Maine’s contributions to the farm-to-table movement, reflecting the state’s vibrant restaurant scene. According to the Maine Department of Agriculture, over 40% of adults now prefer locally sourced food, showing the growing interest in supporting local agriculture.
On June 18, “Song of the Wild” opens, featuring work from notable Maine artists like Jane Dahmen and Eric Hopkins. This show honors Maine’s natural beauty through a variety of artistic styles, capturing everything from ocean vistas to intricate details of wildlife. There will also be educational events in partnership with Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust, helping visitors learn more about Maine’s ecosystems.
Between July 11 and July 25, artists will be painting outdoors for the “Plein Air: Paint it Maine” exhibition, which opens on July 30. This event invites local artists to submit their work inspired by Maine’s breathtaking scenes. Meanwhile, another show, “The Art of Alchemy,” will allow artists to explore mixed media, making for an exciting combination of creativity.
Closing out the season, the “Made in Maine: Annual Members Show” begins on September 10. This exhibition features recent work from gallery members, along with pieces from early Maine Art Gallery contributors, celebrating their legacy in the arts community.
The gallery, a nonprofit since 1958, is not just about exhibitions. It also offers various classes and educational programs for all ages. This commitment to arts education ensures that the love for creativity continues to thrive in the region.
