Just over a month before the new California Michelin Guide is revealed, seven Bay Area eateries have made the prestigious list. This includes a diverse mix of restaurants, from an Oakland spot serving Korean banchan to a soul food joint in San Francisco. These new additions may soon be in the running for Bib Gourmand or star awards at the upcoming ceremony on June 24 in San Diego.

Four of the new eateries are located in San Francisco. Kitchen Istanbul, a Turkish wine bar, impressed reviewers with its silky hummus and crispy, syrup-kissed künefe kadayif for dessert. Maria Isabel, a Mexican restaurant in the Presidio by renowned chefs, highlights Californian ingredients enriched with flavors from Guerrero.

Minnie Bell’s Soul Movement, owned by Chef Fernay McPherson, won praise for its crunchy, rosemary-scented fried chicken and brown butter cornbread. Meanwhile, the fine dining Tuscan restaurant Via Aurelia, part of the Che Fico team, is noted for its upscale service and ambiance.

On the other side of the bay, Oakland’s culinary scene shines with Joodooboo and Popoca. Joodooboo stands out for its homemade tofu and seasonal banchan, while Popoca offers “progressive Salvadoran” cuisine famous for its wood-fired pupusas. Also receiving accolades is Vicinity in Los Gatos, where diners can enjoy a modern tasting menu featuring innovative dishes like tiny everything bagels filled with salmon and cream cheese.

The Michelin Guide also added nine new restaurants from Los Angeles. Highlights include Sonoratown, known for its tortillas, and fine dining restaurant Lielle from Swedish chef Marcus Jernmark. Additional notable mentions are Alto, Casa Leo, Electric Bleu, Kojima, Lynx, The Mulberry, SORA Craft Kitchen in Beverly Hills, Lucien in La Jolla, Alice B. in Palm Springs, Good Alley in Rosemead, and Monte’s in Santa Barbara.

In recent years, the dining scene in California has seen a remarkable evolution. Data shows an increasing trend towards diverse cuisine that highlights local ingredients. According to a 2022 survey by the California Restaurant Association, about 70% of consumers favor restaurants that prioritize fresh, locally sourced food.
