This fall, Montclair State University invites you to experience “The Age of Black Metal,” a unique exhibition running from September 9 to December 14, 2025. This event dives deep into the future of Black culture, exploring the themes of Black futurism and speculative technology. Curated by Ari Melenciano, the exhibition spans two key locations: the George Segal Gallery and the Alexander Kasser Theater.
Building on the ideas presented in the visionary art book “Black Metal,” co-created by Melenciano and others, this exhibition expands on those concepts through immersive installations. The book, produced with support from the Ford Foundation and others, blends speculative futures with spiritual exploration.
Visitors will enter a reimagined world where the principles of “Black Metal” reshape life. The exhibition features interactive displays and creative works based on four main themes:
- Celestial Florilegia: A work by Melenciano that reveals a cosmic view of nature.
- Companion 180, Vol. 1: Jeremy Kamal’s guide connects human and cosmic journeys.
- Dark Voyage: Kordae Jatafa Henry’s cinematic stories explore life beyond Earth.
- Training Grounds: Jordan Caldwell’s exercises encourage self-discovery and growth.
The exhibit also features “The Orbit,” featuring art from those influenced by “Black Metal.” Visitors can engage in creative activities, forming personal expressions and reflecting on the limitless futures that Black culture can envision.
Keep an eye out for various events during the exhibition period, all free of charge. The opening reception on September 16 will include remarks from key figures, while an Art Forum on September 22 will showcase Melenciano discussing the exhibition’s vision. A panel on October 15 will delve into collective liberation, and a film screening on November 5 will feature a discussion on the “Black Metal” film adaptation.
The George Segal Gallery will be open Tuesday through Friday from 12 to 4 p.m., while the Kasser Theater Lobby welcomes guests Monday through Friday from 12 to 6 p.m. Interested visitors can also access the galleries’ free Bloomberg Connects digital guide for added insights.
