Researchers have made a breakthrough in engineering metal tubes that can’t sink. This innovative design could pave the way for safer ships, floating platforms, and even new ways to harvest renewable energy.
More than a century after the Titanic tragedy, the dream of building “unsinkable” ships is closer to reality. A team at the University of Rochester, led by professor Chunlei Guo, has developed a process that transforms standard aluminum tubes into unsinkable structures. This means they can float no matter how much damage they take or how long they are submerged.
In their study published in Advanced Functional Materials, the researchers explain how they create a superhydrophobic effect. By etching tiny pits inside the aluminum tubes, they make the surfaces repel water. When the treated tube hits water, it captures a stable air bubble inside, preventing it from sinking. This is similar to how diving bell spiders use air bubbles to stay buoyant underwater.
Guo noted, “We added a divider in the middle of the tube. Even if you push it down into the water, the bubble remains trapped inside, keeping it afloat.” This design is a significant improvement over earlier methodologies, which sometimes lost buoyancy when tilted. In testing, these tubes showed resilience in rough conditions and maintained their ability to float even when punctured.
The researchers connected multiple tubes to create larger floating structures, potentially serving as rafts or buoys. They tested tubes up to nearly half a meter long and believe the technology could easily scale up for larger applications.
This innovation also opens doors to renewable energy. Rafts made of these tubes can harvest wave energy to generate electricity, offering a green alternative for power sources.
Importantly, this research has caught the attention of the National Science Foundation and other key backers, indicating its potential significance in various fields.
