When NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope captured an image of an elliptical galaxy, it revealed something unexpected: a bright, red arc of light surrounding it. This isn’t a glitch; it’s another galaxy, about 19.5 billion light-years away. The galaxy in the center is relatively closer, at about 2.7 billion light-years from Earth.

The arc’s unique shape comes from a phenomenon called gravitational lensing. This effect, first predicted by Einstein over a century ago, occurs when a massive object warps the fabric of space and time around it, bending the light from objects behind it. In this case, the nearer galaxy acts like a cosmic magnifying glass, allowing us to see the distant galaxy in more detail.

Hubble’s findings highlight the wonders of gravitational lensing. Light from the distant galaxy gets distorted, sometimes creating multiple images, much like how a funhouse mirror works. This has provided astronomers with tools to study galaxies that would otherwise be too faint or far away.

Interestingly, this isn’t a new discovery for scientists. Just four decades ago, astronomers were still learning to recognize the signs of gravitational lensing. In 1987, a massive blue arc was initially thought to be one of the largest objects detected in space. Eventually, researchers discovered it was merely an optical illusion caused by a galaxy cluster. Today, gravitational lenses are invaluable. Observing HerS 020941.1+001557 allows astronomers to see it as it was about 11 billion years ago, providing insights into the early universe. Notably, there’s even a third galaxy in the image, SDSS J020941.23+001600.7, intersecting that red arc.

Gravitational lensing not only deepens our understanding of the cosmos but also illustrates the surprising complexities of space. It allows us to peer back into history, revealing galaxies in their infancy, long before our own solar system formed.
