Less than an hour from Boone, in the stunning Appalachian Mountains, you’ll find Beech Mountain Resort. Each winter, it attracts skiers and snowboarders alike. With its breathtaking views and lively atmosphere, it’s been named the Best Ski Mountain for three consecutive years.
Beech Mountain, opened in 1967, stands at 5,506 feet. It boasts 17 slopes suited for all ages and skill levels, plus eight chairlifts that help keep guests moving. You won’t feel trapped in lines here.
Talia Freeman, the marketing director, shares what sets Beech apart from the rest. “Beech is a vibe,” she says. “With great terrain, a fun park, and a friendly atmosphere, it’s perfect for unwinding after a day on the slopes.” The live music and strong community feeling truly make you feel at home.
The resort provides various lessons for beginners too, ensuring everyone can enjoy the thrill of skiing or snowboarding.
Freeman emphasizes that Beech Mountain is more than just a ski resort; it’s a community. “Our culture and connection with App State create an inclusive environment that keeps people coming back,” she adds.
The Happy Place: Best Boutique

The Happy Place is Boone’s favorite boutique, perfect for any occasion, whether a house party or a laid-back day out. Owner Krista Kull turned the store into a vibrant boutique 13 years ago, renaming it from Indo.
The store’s mission is to spread happiness. Kull mentioned they often showcase colorful, funky styles that reflect the spirit of Boone. They regularly post about their unique fashion on social media, using fun hashtags related to vintage styles.
As summer approaches, Kull plans to introduce new festival styles and dresses that are casual yet trendy, keeping The Happy Place a prime shopping destination.
Despite past challenges like flooding during Hurricane Helene, Kull expresses gratitude for the community’s support. “We’re back and feeling the love,” she says.
Anna Banana’s: Best Thrift Store

Anna Banana’s is the quintessential thrift store, celebrated for its quirky clothes and joyful atmosphere. Voted the Best Thrift Store for the 11th straight year, it has become a staple since opening in 2010.
Owner Anna Roseman believes in creating a fun environment for shoppers. “We aim to brighten people’s days,” she says. The store features modern second-hand items upfront and curated vintage styles in the back.
Recently, Anna Banana’s took action during Hurricane Helene, transforming part of their space into a free store for those affected by the disaster. “We’re always looking to support the community,” Roseman explains.
As the seasons change, the store keeps up with trends, especially offering festival wear as summer arrives.
App State: Best Place to Work as a Local Alum

Colson Smith, an assistant director at App State, shares, “I love working here.” He credits his time as a student and intern for landing a job after graduation, highlighting the partnerships he built during his studies.

The staff feels like family. Huggins notes, “The team supports each other, and it’s easy to ask for help when you need it.”
