On June 20, 2024, Google discontinued its Google One VPN. While it wasn’t the fastest or packed with features, it gave me peace of mind when I used public Wi-Fi. After that shut down, I set out to find a replacement that could match, or even surpass, my old VPN’s functionality.
If you’re a Pixel owner, there’s good news. If you have a Google Pixel 8 or a newer model, you still have access to Google’s built-in VPN service. Google Fi subscribers enjoy a similar perk that runs directly through the Fi app. So, you’re not completely left without a VPN.
When choosing a VPN, I focus on three main things: efficiency, ease of use, and how well it respects my privacy. Many VPNs have a reputation for draining battery life or making devices slow. I want something that works seamlessly.
A key factor is how the VPN manages resources. Google’s VPN was efficient on Android. While many third-party options can deplete battery life, Google’s integration with the OS made it reliable. If a VPN drains your battery quickly, it’s not worth it.
Another issue is CAPTCHAs. Many VPNs share IP addresses among thousands of users. This causes problems, as sites like Google become suspicious and start throwing CAPTCHAs at you. Google’s VPN avoided this with its carefully managed IP space.
The interface is also crucial. I prefer a simple interface over a complicated map filled with servers. A straightforward “Connect” button is all I need.
When I explored alternatives, Proton VPN stood out. Founded by the same team behind Proton Mail, it emphasizes privacy and operates under Swiss laws. The app is easy to use and automatically connects you to the nearest, fastest server.
Proton VPN offers a free version, but the $10/month Plus plan is where the real benefits lie. One standout feature is NetShield, which blocks ads and trackers before they reach your device. This not only speeds up browsing but also conserves battery life.
Speeds have been impressive with Proton—about 80% of my regular connection. Streaming 4K content on Netflix or participating in high-res video calls has been smooth and nearly buffer-free. Additionally, CAPTCHAs are infrequent; I might only face one every couple of weeks.
In the end, losing Google’s VPN felt frustrating at first. But after trying Proton, I’ve realized that I found a tool that’s not only more effective but also budget-friendly. For less than the cost of a latte each month, I can enjoy peace of mind knowing my data is secure.
