For the fourth year running, Grand Canyon University (GCU) is set to kick off its season at the highly competitive MLB Desert Invitational. The Lopes’ 2026 tournament lineup has just been confirmed, adding three more tough opponents to an already challenging schedule.
Here’s how GCU’s first weekend looks:
- Friday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m.: vs. Northeastern – Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark
- Saturday, Feb. 14 at 1 p.m.: vs. Penn State – Salt River Fields (Scottsdale)
- Sunday, Feb. 15 at 5:30 p.m.: vs. Nebraska – Sloan Park (Mesa)
All three teams from the opening weekend ranked in the top 85 of last season’s Ratings Percentage Index (RPI). Two of them made it to the NCAA Tournament, showing just how tough GCU’s competition will be.
The Lopes will start at home against Northeastern, a solid team from Brookline, Massachusetts. Last season, they boasted an impressive 49-11 record and participated in the NCAA Tournament for the third time in five years. Their RPI ranked them at 26. This match is part of GCU’s tradition of hosting an exciting home opener, consistently drawing over 5,000 fans.
As the Lopes take on Penn State, they’ll look to build on their success from past encounters. In 2018, GCU swept Penn State in a series at home, highlighted by a 19-strikeout performance from pitcher Jake Wong. Last season, the Nittany Lions ended up with a RPI of 85, finishing the year with a 33-23 record.
The match against Nebraska will mark the third straight year that GCU faces this Big Ten rival. In their last meeting, GCU secured a victory with a late game-winning hit from sophomore Cannon Peery. Nebraska has also been strong lately, making consecutive NCAA Tournaments and finishing 2025 with an RPI of 53.
Looking at GCU’s overall nonconference schedule, they’ll compete against nine teams that played in the 2025 NCAA Tournament. The average RPI of their nonconference opponents sits at 90. This data shows that GCU is preparing for a challenging but exciting season.
In sports, facing tough opponents early on can set the tone for the rest of the year. According to sports analysts, playing against higher-ranked teams helps programs grow, as they learn valuable lessons that can impact their overall performance.
This upcoming tournament isn’t just pivotal for GCU—it’s a showcase of college baseball talent. With a blend of seasoned teams and emerging talents, fans can expect an engaging weekend filled with thrilling moments.
With every pitch, we’ll see just how ready the Lopes are to take on the competition. It’s an exciting time for GCU baseball fans!
