For many of us in South Austin, Radio Coffee & Beer feels like the heart of our neighborhood. It’s known for its lovely lawn, delicious food trucks, live music, and vibrant community spirit. That’s why I felt both excited and nervous when they announced a new location in Montopolis. Would it capture the same magic?

Radio/East keeps much of the charm of the original. It has a large outdoor space, a smaller indoor area, and a lineup of food trucks. The drink menu offers familiar favorites, and the music scene may be even better, featuring acts like Santigold and Shakey Graves. This location truly enhances what the brand stands for.

Now, let’s talk about Radio Rosewood. This newer spot has a different vibe. Located where the beloved Try Hard Coffee Roasters once stood, it’s in a busier, more urban area of East Austin. The atmosphere here is cozy, with warm lighting and inviting décor. It feels more like a city café, while still holding onto the essence of Radio.

When you look at the menu, it’s hard not to be reminded of the other locations. You can find the same reliable coffee drinks and local beers. The cocktail list is a highlight, introducing innovative choices like coffee cocktails, including their standout Sprotini — a velvety espresso martini that may win over even the most skeptical espresso lovers.

For those who enjoy refreshing drinks, Radio Rosewood has fun options, such as the Frozen Elote Outlaw — a delightful slushy bursting with pineapple and a hint of mezcal. Another interesting pick is the Drug Mule, which features a THC-infused nonalcoholic spirit. While it has a light, uplifting effect, it’s more about the flavors than a heavy hit.

Unlike its siblings, Radio Rosewood relies on a central kitchen instead of food trucks. The highlight here is Shortwave Diner, which serves smashburgers and sandwiches. However, some menu items like the smashburger didn’t leave me craving more. The breakfast sandwich, on the other hand, stood out. It combines a fluffy English muffin, a perfectly cooked egg, crispy bacon, and fresh arugula. With added avocado spread, it becomes a breakfast worth returning for.

Radio Rosewood skillfully mixes Radio’s neighborhood charm with a city flair. While I miss the food truck experience, I appreciate having a cozy spot to grab a drink while exploring East 11th Street. Despite some menu shortcomings, the coffee and cocktails will definitely keep me coming back.
