At Display Week in Los Angeles, two impressive 85-inch TVs were on display: one showcasing mini-LED technology with super quantum dots (SQD) and the other using RGB LED, the current trend in TV displays. Both were playing the same content to illustrate the differences in color quality and performance.
The SQD TV, likely a TCL model, was able to produce vibrant colors without the typical color bleeding seen in RGB LED TVs. RGB LED technology aims to create rich colors by mixing red, green, and blue light in zones. However, this setup can lead to a problem known as “color crosstalk,” where colors from adjacent zones bleed into each other. This phenomenon can alter skin tones and affect the overall viewing experience, especially in vibrant scenes.
During the demonstration, this issue became clear. As different colors appeared on the RGB LED TV, viewers saw the surrounding colors becoming lighter and less saturated. This effect was vividly noticeable, particularly in skin tones, where backgrounds could change how skin was perceived.
Both TVs were tested under similar conditions. Notably, the SQD TV displayed consistent performance, with no color crosstalk, even during dynamic action scenes. The advanced dimming technology, with about 20,000 dimming zones compared to roughly 8,000 for RGB LED, provided superior contrast. The more dimming zones allow for better control of brightness across the screen.
This assessment of color and performance isn’t just a technical rundown; it reflects a larger trend in display technology. According to a recent survey, more than 60% of consumers prioritize color accuracy and display quality when choosing a TV. As demands for high-quality visuals increase, manufacturers must address these challenges. LG Display has also focused on the potential problems with RGB LED TVs, stressing the importance of addressing color accuracy.
Looking ahead, improvement in RGB technology is anticipated, as companies innovate to resolve existing issues. But for now, SQD technology appears to have a clear advantage in rendering colors accurately and vividly, especially in critical areas like skin tones.
