Both Lightfoot and Demmer are keeping an eye on the hotly contested race to replace Rep. Jan Schakowsky in Illinois’ 9th Congressional District.
“It’s a crowded field with substantial funding, both for and against certain candidates,” Lightfoot noted. Demmer mentioned that Kat Abughazaleh is gaining momentum as primary day approaches, despite Daniel Biss leading in earlier polls. “Candidates who truly rally their supporters tend to do better,” he added.
Recent campaign finance records highlight the financial dynamics of this race. Abughazaleh, who just moved to Illinois, has raised over $3.3 million, with most donations—especially those of $200 or less—coming from outside the state. Fine follows closely with more than $2.5 million raised, predominantly from larger donors outside Illinois. Biss stands at over $2.3 million, with nearly $2 million sourced from in-state contributors. Andrew, Amiwala, and Huynh have also reported sizable fundraising, each exceeding the million-dollar mark.
These numbers show how vital grassroots support can be, often leading to surprising outcomes in elections. According to a 2022 report by the Pew Research Center, candidates who effectively engage with their communities often outperform expectations, a trend we may see reflected in this race.
It’s interesting to note how history can repeat itself. In the past, underdogs with strong local support have upset more established candidates, reminding us that in politics, anything can happen.
