Since Narendra Modi became Prime Minister in 2014, Indian Railways has made impressive changes. One of the standout achievements is the Vande Bharat train, the first semi-high-speed train designed and built in India. It started service on February 15, 2019, and quickly expanded, with over 50 trains now serving various routes across the country.
Vande Bharat trains have already completed nearly 40,000 trips, carrying over 4 crore passengers. In just the 2023-24 fiscal year, these trains traveled as far as circling the Earth more than 310 times! They now connect over 280 districts across 24 states and Union Territories, making them a popular choice for travelers in India.
The success of Vande Bharat hasn’t gone unnoticed internationally. Countries like Chile, Canada, and Malaysia are interested in bringing these trains into their own rail networks. They’re attracted by the advanced technology and efficiency these trains offer.
Meanwhile, Indian Railways has fully embraced electric trains, phasing out diesel locomotives completely. Electric trains are not only better for the environment but also more cost-effective. For instance, an electric train uses about 20 units of electricity for every kilometer. In the Ajmer railway division, this means Indian Railways pays around Rs 130 per kilometer.
In contrast, diesel trains consume about 3.5 to 4 liters of diesel per kilometer, resulting in costs of around Rs 350 to Rs 400 per kilometer. The shift to electric trains will save money and reduce carbon emissions.
As Vande Bharat trains continue to grow in numbers and electric railways expand, India’s rail network is transforming quickly. These developments not only enhance the travel experience but also make India a key player in modern, sustainable railway technology.
