Discover the Enigmatic Soundscapes of Djrum: A Journey Through ‘Under Tangled Silence’

Felix Manuel, known as Djrum, masterfully blends different musical styles in his work. In a recent interview with Resident Advisor, he discussed some of his impressive mixing techniques. One technique involves using ambient tracks to create dramatic shifts in energy, while another is the "crab" scratch, a classic hip-hop method that uses precise finger movements on the crossfader. With just a collection of records, a mixer, and three turntables, he can move effortlessly through genres like dubstep, house, and jazz within a single set. His recent BBC Essential Mix showcases this skill, featuring 62 records in just two hours.

His latest album, Under Tangled Silence, takes a different approach. This third album reflects his diverse musical background, combining elements from classical training with experiences from underground raves. Unlike the high-energy nature of his DJ sets, this album feels smooth and introspective. It dives deep into his emotions, presenting a unique blend of sounds that is rarely found in club music.

From a young age, Manuel has played the piano, but it wasn’t until recently that he prominently incorporated it into his music. In a 2016 interview, he shared that the piano parts in his Forgetting EP were composed rather than improvised. In Under Tangled Silence, however, the piano serves as a lead instrument, showcasing more spontaneous, jazzy improvisations. One notable piece, "Waxcap," originated as an improv that he later developed further.

The album features live instruments, too. Manuel plays harp and percussion, and he collaborates with cellist Zosia Jagodzinska to enrich the sound. The album’s blend of jazz, classical, and electronic music is evident not just in the instruments but also in the overall arrangement; it rarely repeats patterns, creating a fluid, dynamic listening experience reminiscent of birds in flight.

According to a 2022 survey from the International Music Industry Report, many listeners are increasingly gravitating toward artists like Djrum who push genre boundaries. This trend highlights the demand for more innovative and emotionally resonant music in today’s scene.

Djrum’s journey reflects a growing movement in music—where the lines between genres blur and artists create a more personal connection with their audience. His unique approach provides a refreshing take on modern music, making Under Tangled Silence a significant contribution to his evolving craft.
