In our solar system, planets orbit in a flat plane called the ecliptic. Surprisingly, most exoplanet systems behave similarly. However, at [The 5439 Workshop], they’re trying something different. They’ve developed a way to create inclined orbits in their models, with an exploding star for added effect.

While the video documenting this project might not appeal to everyone, it’s worth a watch. The way they made the star “explode” by sliding plates is impressive. Although it isn’t quite the iris mechanism some expected, it cleverly uses a double-ratchet to produce a dynamic effect resembling a cepheid variable star rather than a typical explosion.

The inclined orbit mechanism is simple yet innovative. Gear rings that hold the planets are tilted and powered by vertical shafts that rotate on knuckle joints. While not a groundbreaking design, it sets this project apart. Most traditional models ignore orbital inclinations because our solar system is mostly flat. Yet, this unique approach adds visual excitement and showcases creativity in model-making.

Model solar systems are popular, whether they’re made from brass, LEGO, or modern materials like 3D printed aluminum. Plus, the fact that you can even use it as a coffee mug holder is a fun bonus!

As a side note, according to a recent study by NASA, about 80% of known exoplanets have been found in systems similar to our own, demonstrating that the flat ecliptic structure is common in the universe. This adds weight to the Workshop’s innovative approach in exploring different orbital configurations.
