On April 21, the Piedmont Food Fest will mark its fifth anniversary. This volunteer-driven event has become a beloved tradition, showcasing the community’s effort and spirit.
Founder Roger Tsai reflects on the festival’s origins. “In 2022, as we were emerging from the pandemic, we saw a need for connection. The Bay Area boasts many diverse cultures that deserve celebration,” he shares.
Initially, the event relied on word-of-mouth. Diana Lee, who oversees food vendors and social media, noted that most attendees were from Piedmont. Even in its first year, the fest drew about 1,500 people—a promising sign for Tsai and the team.
“Having that many show up was thrilling. Now, we attract over 2,000 people annually,” Tsai adds. As awareness grew, so did attendance, with visitors coming from all over to enjoy the festivities.
The festival has expanded significantly over the years. What began with around ten food vendors has grown to include 20 food trucks and stations, featuring cuisines from Thai to Tanzanian to Hawaiian. “We aim to introduce attendees to foods they might not normally encounter,” Tsai explains.
Volunteers play a crucial role in this success. The festival website lists about 170 volunteer slots each year, open to anyone interested. Junior Amelia Oldrin emphasizes the organized process, which includes online sign-ups, shirts, tickets, and orientation.
Gladwin Horsley, another junior, expresses excitement for this year’s fest, scheduled for April 25 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year will feature six drink vendors and eighteen food trucks, offering Vietnamese, Spanish, and Mediterranean dishes.
The festival isn’t just about food; it also highlights community partnerships. This year involves collaborations with organizations like the Piedmont Asian American Club, the Piedmont Education Foundation, and No Immigrant No Spice. “These partnerships enrich the experience and promote unity,” Tsai notes.
In a recent survey, over 78% of attendees expressed their appreciation for the diverse food options. Many return year after year, drawn not only by the flavors but also by the community atmosphere. As food trends evolve, events like the Piedmont Food Fest remain essential in fostering connection through culture and cuisine.
