The visit from the International University Sports Federation (FISU) delegation to North Carolina was both exciting and promising. About three months into his role as Secretary General and CEO, Matthias Remund, along with FISU President Leonz Eder and Director of Summer Games Jing Zhao, explored the area in preparation for the 2029 FISU World University Games.
During their trip, they met key figures from the North Carolina Organising Committee (NCOC) and toured impressive sports facilities. They even caught two intense basketball matches, which showcased the vibrant sports culture of the region. “It’s an honor for FISU’s new CEO to visit as we prepare for one of our biggest events,” said Hill Carrow, Chairman of NCOC. He praised Remund for his understanding of what it takes to run such a large-scale event.
A highlight of the visit was meeting North Carolina’s new governor, Josh Stein. The governor expressed his enthusiasm for the Games, noting that North Carolina is a prime spot for university sports. “This event will bring over 10,000 participants from around the globe, creating a fantastic atmosphere on our campuses,” Eder remarked.
The delegation was also thrilled to experience March Madness at the Lenovo Center, where they witnessed thrilling NCAA games. The energy of over 19,000 excited fans left a lasting impression. In fact, according to recent data from the NCAA, the event has seen a consistent rise in attendance, highlighting the growing popularity of college basketball.
Throughout their visit, the FISU team received updates on venue progress and explored potential accommodations for the athletes. With support from both the state and local businesses, North Carolina is solidifying its plans for the Games. Remund noted the importance of financial backing for such large events, and the early signs of support are encouraging.
Looking ahead, the NCOC is dedicated to making the 2029 FISU World University Games a standout event. With participation from about 10,000 competitors from over 150 countries, the Games promise to be a significant celebration of sports and culture. They will feature competitions in 18 Olympic sports across multiple venues.
The NCOC aims not only to host a successful event but also to showcase the vibrant communities and universities in North Carolina. With every meeting and event leading up to the Games, it’s clear that there’s a strong commitment to delivering an unforgettable experience for athletes and visitors alike.
