London’s Lifestyle Home Show kicked off on Friday, bringing a positive vibe to the housing scene. Lower interest rates and a new rebate program for home improvements are creating buzz around the industry.

The Agriplex at Western Fair District is buzzing with over 350 booths featuring construction, renovation, and home improvement companies. Organizers are hoping to draw in about 10,000 visitors over the three days of the event.

Jared Zaifman, the CEO of the London Home Builders’ Association, noted an exciting change this year. “Last year was tough due to soaring interest rates. Now, with rates going down, people are more interested in new homes and renovations,” he said.

This year, the Ontario government announced a rebate program that could cover up to 30% of energy efficiency upgrades. This includes costs for new windows, doors, insulation, smart thermostats, and even solar panels. Energy Minister Stephen Lecce expressed optimism that this program, launching Tuesday, will lead to both immediate and long-term savings for homeowners.

For instance, families upgrading their insulation can receive up to $8,900 in rebates. They could also earn $100 for every door or window they replace. If a homeowner invests $15,000 in a new heat pump, they may get a $4,500 rebate and potentially save 50% on their heating bills.

While some details are still being finalized and not all renovation projects will qualify, experts believe this program could motivate homeowners to start energy-efficient projects. Curtis Godick from Builders Choice Air Systems shared that every time rebate programs are introduced, interest spikes as people want to know more about the savings available.

The new program is said to improve upon one that was cut in 2018. Lecce mentioned it will allow more homeowners to qualify and offers a longer commitment. The province plans to allocate around $900 million annually for energy efficiency projects, a significant increase compared to previous budgets.
