Jean Aldrich-Simmons has a deep love for plants. She knows the ins and outs of gardening, like the difference between a 70-day and an 85-day tomato. Each season, she opens her stand at the South Lansing Farmers Market, offering starter plants like tomatoes and green onions.
She enjoys giving plants to kids, igniting their excitement for gardening. “The kids want to take the plant home, plant it, and share their successes with me,” she shares.
Farmers markets are more than just a place to buy produce. According to Jenny Wagemann, manager of the Allen Farmers Market, they offer fresher food, better taste, and a more enjoyable shopping experience than large grocery stores. As for the market’s future, exciting changes are happening. New legislation now allows vendors to ship food across Michigan. Alysha Cowles, selling her popular “s’mores crack” marshmallows, is thrilled about this update. Inspired by social media, her handmade marshmallows captivated customers right from the start and now feature unique flavors like Mountain Dew Baja Blast.
The South Lansing Farmers Market is also home to a vibrant community of immigrant farmers. These individuals cultivate about 144 plots near Lansing Technical High School, growing unique foods for local markets and restaurants. Dunbar recalls the challenges of getting the farm operational. She learned a valuable lesson when invasive species returned to the garden after clearing land. Instead of viewing it as a setback, she saw it as an opportunity for growth.
“The ‘weeds’ turned out to be a desirable plant for some farmers,” she said, highlighting the diversity in farming methods. This community can focus on producing exotic plants without the need for extensive land. Dunbar plans to introduce these unique produce items at the market this summer, aiming to widen customers’ culinary horizons.
