For a while now, Apple has shown interest in developing AR glasses. The release of Vision Pro has slowed down the talks, but now the company is back in the game, aiming for AI glasses akin to the popular Meta Ray-Bans.
Since their debut at the end of 2023, Meta Ray-Bans have attracted plenty of attention. Despite privacy concerns about Meta, many are eager to use glasses equipped with cameras, microphones, and speakers. These features allow users to interact with the Meta AI, listen to music, and capture photos or videos.
There have been whispers about Apple creating its own version of these glasses, and development seems to be making significant strides. Reports say Apple plans to include two camera lenses: one for computer vision and another for photography and video. What’s more, they have managed to fit all the necessary components into the glasses’ frame, eliminating the need for an external battery.
Apple recently spent $2 billion to acquire a startup called Q.ai. This company has expertise in machine learning that could help Apple interpret silent voice input. Currently, many voice assistants struggle to pick up whispers or soft speech, especially in noisy environments. If Apple successfully implements this technology, the glasses could change how we interact with voice assistants, making them far more user-friendly.
Q.ai has also developed systems to interpret micro facial movements. With these advancements, Apple could enhance communication through the glasses, making it more intuitive and discreet. This could attract a wider audience and elevate the appeal of voice assistants.
As we look ahead, it’s likely that Apple’s AI glasses will cost more than their Meta counterparts. However, if they deliver on cutting-edge speech recognition, consumers might be willing to pay the extra price. While no official release date has been set, experts believe they could hit the market within the next year.
