Indian Railways is making long-distance travel more accessible with the launch of nine new Amrit Bharat Express trains from Assam and West Bengal. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced these new services on social media, aiming to connect these northeastern states with major destinations across the country, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra.
The Ministry of Railways emphasizes that these trains will aid people traveling for jobs, education, and family visits. This initiative is crucial since Assam and West Bengal have a large population of migrants who depend on rail travel.
These trains are thoughtfully designed to accommodate the high demand seen during busy seasons like festivals and migration periods. They promise reliability, comfort, and affordability, making it easier for travelers to reach their destinations.
Significant routes include connections from Guwahati’s Kamakhya station to Rohtak and from Dibrugarh to Gomti Nagar in Lucknow. Travelers from North Bengal can expect links from New Jalpaiguri to Nagercoil and Tiruchirappalli, enhancing connections to Tamil Nadu. In addition, Alipurduar will gain new services to Bengaluru and Mumbai, making travel between eastern and southern India more convenient.
The expansion is part of a larger effort to enhance affordable interstate travel. The Amrit Bharat Express trains were introduced during the Amrit Kaal period, aiming to offer long-distance travel options without air-conditioning while providing sleeper class accommodations.
Fares are set at around Rs 500 per 1,000 kilometers, making it an economical choice for daily commuters. Already, 30 Amrit Bharat Express trains have been operational since December 2023, and the addition of these nine services highlights rapid progress in improving rail connectivity.
The trains come equipped with modern amenities, including snack tables, comfortable seating, and updated toilets. Safety features such as fire suppression and facilities for passengers with disabilities are also included to enhance the travel experience.
In a recent survey, it was noted that 63% of respondents prefer train travel for long distances due to comfort and cost-effectiveness, highlighting the growing reliance on rail as a primary mode of transport in India.
