Google is rolling out a new redesign for the Phone app, called M3 Expressive. This update, version 185, is gradually making its way to users.
The Phone app is getting a fresh look and better organization. Notably, the “Favorites” and “Recents” tabs are merging into one. This new combo will appear as a carousel at the top of a feed now called “Home.” The floating action button (FAB) for dialing is being replaced with a “Keypad” tab at the bottom. The “Voicemail” feature remains the same, while a navigation drawer will now include Contacts, Settings, Clear Call History, and Help & Feedback.
These navigation changes began rolling out to some beta users last month. Users might see different versions—some with only the old layout and some with the new redesign, leading to a mixed experience.
With this beta version, more features are emerging. Users can now customize their Incoming Call gesture settings. The in-call interface is also updated to reflect the latest design trends.
While the Home and Keypad tabs aren’t widely available yet, those still using the FAB will notice some design tweaks, like rounded corners on the bottom sheet.
