Gmail is rolling out a fresh design, thanks to the Material 3 Expressive update. Since early testing started back in June, users can now enjoy features that make email management a bit more fun.
The message list on the homepage is now rounded, creating a cleaner look. This design is similar to Google Messages, setting it apart from other apps that use separate containers for each message.
When you swipe to archive, delete, or mark emails, you’ll notice a smooth, pill-shaped animation. This little touch adds a bit of flair to the experience.
Right now, the search bar at the top isn’t in this update, but Google has been testing it recently, so it might appear soon.
Opening an email shows off the new look further. The top half keeps the app bar and subject line within a unified container. They’ve also switched from button outlines to solid colors for replies and forwards, which pop against the unchanged bottom bar.
However, the Compose screen and homescreen widget haven’t seen updates yet.
This update is available in version 2025.08.11.x of Gmail for Android.
The changes come at a time when email tools are becoming increasingly vital for remote communication. According to a recent survey by Statista, around 61% of remote workers reported increased stress due to email overload. Enhancements like these aim to create a more pleasant and efficient experience.
As users continue to adapt to newer interfaces, platforms like Gmail keep evolving to meet their needs. Whether it’s through design changes or new functionalities, the focus remains on improving the user experience overall. For more on Gmail, check out its Google Play page.
