The Phone by Google app is getting a fresh look with the Material 3 Expressive redesign. This update brings new features like “Horizontal swipe” and “Single tap” for answering calls. Right now, it’s rolling out to beta users.
The interface remains user-friendly. The four-tab bottom bar has a darker background, but the “Search contacts” field stays the same. The Recents tab shows all calls in rectangles with rounded corners, making it visually appealing. You can still tap to view different number options.
There are updates across the app, including in Favorites and the dialer. While the number pad looks unchanged, the background now has rounded corners. Filters for Calls—All, Missed, Contacts, Non-Spam, and Spam—have a fresher, non-outlined design.
In the settings, users will find a new “Incoming call gesture” menu. The incoming call screen now has a scalloped shape and rotates until you choose an action. Buttons like “Urgent?” and “Message” are displayed in pill-shaped containers, enhancing clarity and ease of use.
Live call screens also got a makeover. Circular buttons have been replaced with pill shapes that transform into rectangles when selected. The end call button is now more prominent, making it easier to identify.
This redesign aligns with the overall trend in mobile app development focusing on user engagement and aesthetic appeal. A survey by Statista in early 2023 noted that 76% of users prefer apps with updated, visually appealing designs. Google’s push for aesthetic updates reflects a broader movement in tech toward enhancing user experiences.
As the rollout begins with beta version 180 of the Phone app, feedback is likely to highlight either appreciation for the new interface or critiques of functionality. For those wanting to stay ahead, it’s worth considering joining the beta program.
