Discover the First Reveal of Rare’s Everwild: Exclusive Screenshots Unveiled Through Artist’s Portfolio!

Recent screenshots of Rare’s canceled game, Everwild, have surfaced. They come from an artist’s portfolio who briefly worked on the project. Initially revealed in 2019, Everwild wowed fans with its vibrant visuals and whimsical creatures. The anticipation grew when it was showcased again the next year, showcasing gameplay that hinted at players interacting with these odd beings.

Despite the excitement, the game’s mechanics remained a mystery. Unfortunately, the project was shelved earlier this year amid significant layoffs at Microsoft. This decision has left fans wanting more and questioning the future of Rare.

The newly released screenshots, spotted by mp1st, offer a glimpse into what could have been. They display the game’s user interface, showcasing an inventory menu where players could cycle through options like Favorites, Figments, Tools, Mosaics, Seeds, and Plants. Figments, in particular, appear to be unique plant-like creatures.

Interestingly, the images also show a player character next to a stone circle, hinting at possible farming or base-building features. However, it remains unclear if these were integral to the main gameplay or more of a side activity.

Other screenshots reveal graphical settings and give a foggy look at the game’s stylistic visuals. While there’s not much to analyze, it’s the first glimpse we’ve had beyond those early trailers.

Earlier this year, Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, spoke about Rare’s progress. He acknowledged the studio’s journey and expressed optimism about the future. He said, “It has been [a while]. And we’ve been able to give those teams time in what they’re doing, which is good.” Despite this optimism, the cancellation of Everwild raises questions about Rare’s next steps, aside from their ongoing work on the live-service game, Sea of Thieves.

This situation reflects a trend seen across the gaming industry, where ambitious projects often face abrupt cancellations. A recent report by the International Game Developers Association indicated that around 60% of game developers experience project cancellations at some point in their careers. Such shifts can stem from budget constraints, changes in leadership, or shifts in market demands.

The sentiment around Everwild’s cancellation echoes user reactions on social media. Many fans expressed their disappointment, using platforms like Twitter to voice their enthusiasm for the game’s unique concept. Yet, with the industry constantly evolving, fans hope to see Rare and other studios continue innovating, perhaps taking chances on new ideas in the future.
