Javier Moreno has the restaurant business in his blood. His parents, Roberto and Griselda, have been in the industry for over two decades. They’ve owned Mamita’s Family Mexican Restaurant for 13 years, where Javier grew up learning the ins and outs of running a successful eatery.
Recently, Javier partnered with his dad to open Mezcalita Cocina y Cantina at 162 Tracker Drive, in the space once occupied by Mama Pearl’s Cajun Kitchen. He describes it as smaller than Mamita’s but still features many of the same beloved dishes.
The vibe at Mezcalita is different. While Mamita’s is known for its lively, colorful atmosphere, Mezcalita offers a more modern, upscale look. Regardless, the food is just as delicious. Javier is also committed to continuing the tradition of live music, adding to the dining experience.
Have you ever dined at Mamita’s on a Thursday? If not, you’re missing out. They have harpist Adrian Ramirez perform while he strolls through the restaurant. His heartfelt renditions, including a unique take on Sinatra, create a lovely atmosphere.
At Mezcalita, you can catch musician Linda Gutierrez on Fridays and Saturdays. She adds her guitar and vocals to the ambiance, enhancing your dining experience. Mezcalita is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends.
Opening a restaurant during these times isn’t easy. According to a recent survey by Restaurant Technologies, about 80% of restaurant owners say they face staffing challenges, and nearly 70% have noticed supply chain disruptions. Javier’s experience in the family-run business locations may help him navigate these hurdles.
When looking at the trend in the restaurant industry, many new establishments focus on smaller spaces and takeout options, similar to Javier’s approach with Mezcalita. As seen in the case of Dusty Hernandez, who originally ran a small vegan drive-thru, shifting back to a simpler model can help cut costs and streamline operations.
With restaurants constantly evolving, it’s clear that family-run businesses like those of the Moreno family play an essential role in preserving culinary traditions while adapting to modern demands.
