Mexican cuisine and boba tea are thriving together in the Bay Area, especially at a spot called Teaqueria. This gem is just a stone’s throw from Santa Clara University. Frank Chang, the original owner, started his journey with a small boba tea catering service aimed at local tech companies.
Interestingly, the restaurant is located right next to Bellarmine College Preparatory, an all-boys private high school. Before Teaqueria opened to the public, some curious students asked Chang if they could get boba directly from him. That sparked an unexpected turn in his plans.
Mason Tran, the current owner who took over in early 2025, shared that he never planned to serve a wider audience until the buzz from those students made him reconsider. Now, it’s common to see a crowd of Bellarmine students enjoying their meals between classes or before games.
Cole Morgan, a senior at Bellarmine, expressed how convenient it is for him and his volleyball team. “Before our games, it’s great to grab a quick meal nearby,” he said.
Under Tran’s ownership, the menu has evolved with exciting new dishes. Most recently, he introduced Mexican ramen and pandan waffles—both blends that honor the cultural influences at play. “These unique items draw a lot of customers looking for authentic flavors,” Tran explained. He emphasized the credibility of their Mexican recipes, highlighting that a skilled chef who’s been with them since the beginning ensures traditional authenticity.
Interestingly, the rise of boba tea has been met with a surge of popularity across the country. In fact, the global bubble tea market was valued at around $2 billion in 2020 and is set to grow substantially in the coming years.
Teaqueria stands out, offering an engaging mix of two beloved cuisines, making it a go-to spot not just for students but for anyone in the Bay Area looking for something delicious and unique.
