Alumnus G.T. Karber from the University of Arkansas has created a buzz with his murder mystery puzzle series called Murdle. His puzzles have gained international attention, drawing in fans eager to solve whodunits.
In a recent video titled “Short Takes: The Man Behind Murdle,” Karber shares his journey. He recounts how it all began with a simple sketch on a napkin. His time at the University helped shape his creative path. “I came to the University of Arkansas because I wanted to creatively write,” he says, highlighting the school’s supportive environment.
Karber, originally from Fort Smith, double-majored in English and mathematics, also minoring in psychology. His academic journey included earning an M.F.A. in screenwriting from USC. As a Bodenhamer Fellow, he had the chance to study abroad three times, which broadened his perspective on writing and storytelling.
“Those experiences gave me a breadth of knowledge that fueled my passion,” he explains.
Murdle has blossomed into a three-volume book series, along with a collegiate version, a junior edition, and even a board game. Karber’s work was recognized at the 2024 British Book Awards, where he won “Book of the Year.”
His journey reflects a growing trend in creative education. More young people are combining their interests to carve unique career paths. According to a recent survey from the National Endowment for the Arts, creative pursuits among students have increased by 15% over the past five years, showing a shift in how education encourages diverse skills.
