A recent fossil find in Northumberland, UK, has amazed scientists. This discovery sheds light on a giant millipede species that once grew as large as a car, known as Arthropleura. These creatures roamed the Earth 326 million years ago during the Carboniferous period.
The fossil, initially found in 2018, was a chance discovery. It was encased in sandstone, with its segments clearly visible. While the fossil measures just under 30 inches, experts estimate that the actual millipede reached lengths of about 9 feet and weighed roughly 110 pounds.
Neil Davies, an Earth scientist at the University of Cambridge, described the finding as a “complete fluke.” The fossil’s excellent preservation offers a rare opportunity to study these ancient creatures. Arthropleura thrived in an era when the atmosphere had higher oxygen levels, suggesting that such conditions might have supported their enormous sizes. However, oxygen levels were still lower than those typically linked to giant arthropods, leaving specialists curious about other factors that contributed to their growth.
Rich, nutrient-dense forests and a lack of predators likely played a role in their development.
In addition to the Northumberland find, earlier fossils analyzed through advanced CT scanning have revealed more about Arthropleura’s head. These fossils date back to the 1980s, and researchers found the creature’s head structure more similar to that of a centipede than a millipede. Its head featured short, bell-shaped antennae and prominent eyes for navigation, along with an opening for shedding its exoskeleton. Mickael Lheritier, a co-author of a study on these findings, noted the distinct difference in body and head structure, providing new insights into the evolution of arthropods.
The ecosystems where Arthropleura lived were likely lush and diverse. Located near the equator, these ancient millipedes survived on vegetation and may have preyed on smaller organisms. This discovery changes previous assumptions about their habitat, which was thought to be coal swamps.
Yet, despite these exciting discoveries, many questions remain. The fossil remains are incomplete, complicating our understanding of Arthropleura‘s life cycle. However, ongoing research could help fill in these gaps, paving the way for a deeper understanding of ancient life on Earth.
