William Charles Wellner passed away on March 26, 2026, in Loveland, Colorado. He was 96. Born on June 17, 1929, in Red Bank, New Jersey, he was the son of William C. H. Wellner and Charlotte B. Wellner. William grew up in Red Bank, where he finished his education and graduated from Central College in Pella, Iowa. In 1951, he married Esther A. Peters, and together they built a life dedicated to family and education.
He earned his master’s degree from the University of Iowa and later his Doctorate from the University of Illinois. His teaching career spanned several states, including high school math and science in Iowa and Illinois. William later joined the faculty at the Barron County campus of Stout State University in Wisconsin and the University of Dubuque in Iowa, where he served as a Department and Division Chairman until his retirement in 1992. After retiring, he moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas.
William was an active member of the Presbyterian Church of Bella Vista, taking on roles as an Elder and Deacon and participating in various committees. He enjoyed golfing, playing bridge, and leading an active life through hiking with the Hills ‘n Dales Hikers Club. Traveling was another passion of his, allowing him to explore new places with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther, who he was married to for 62 years, as well as three sisters and two brothers. He is survived by two daughters, Carol J. Friedmann and her husband, Stanley, from Luxemburg, Iowa, and Julie A. Monroe and her husband, Robert, from Loveland, Colorado. William also leaves behind five grandsons, four great-grandchildren, and a sister, Patricia Taylor, from Rexford, Montana.
A memorial service will take place on June 10, 2026, at 11 a.m. at the Bella Vista Presbyterian Church, located at 1880 Forest Hills Blvd., Bella Vista, Arkansas. Memorial donations may be made to the Presbyterian Church of Bella Vista or Circle of Life Hospice.
