In Penrose, Colorado, there’s a unique story at the Apple Valley Farm Sanctuary, led by Deanna Downer and her husband, Weldon. While they care for around 100 rescued animals, one unusual resident has captured many hearts—a jumping spider named Ocho.

Ocho came into Deanna’s life last December. While she was watering a potted orchid in her bathroom, she spotted the small black spider perched on the planter’s edge. This curious little creature seemed thirsty, so Deanna offered him a wet Q-tip. To her surprise, Ocho eagerly accepted the treat.

What started as a simple interaction blossomed into a daily routine. Each morning, as Deanna got ready, she and Ocho would share little chats. “I loved our daily conversations,” she shared. This bond grew stronger over time. Six months later, Ocho has become quite the explorer, leaving his original spot in the bathroom to wander around the house.

Deanna has found joy in having Ocho as a companion. She encourages others to view small creatures like spiders with kindness. “We’re often taught that insects are scary,” she said. “But they just want to be treated with respect, just like us.”

Interestingly, recent surveys show that many people are open to cohabitating with insects, given the right perspective. A survey by the Journal of Insect Behavior revealed that 58% of respondents admitted they’d be less likely to kill a spider if they knew it was harmless.
