An exciting development is unfolding beneath the Great Salt Lake. Recent research reveals a hidden freshwater reservoir that extends further than scientists previously thought. This discovery may provide a solution to the lake’s dust pollution problem.

The Great Salt Lake is famous for its high salt content—up to eight times saltier than the ocean. In recent years, freshwater springs have been popping up in various areas near the lake. This prompted scientists to investigate further.

A team from the University of Utah used a helicopter equipped with electromagnetic sensors to map the lake’s subsurface. They uncovered a freshwater reservoir that plunges to depths of 10,000 to 13,000 feet. “Understanding how deep and wide this water is helps us estimate its potential volume,” said Michael Zhdanov, a geology professor and lead author of the study published in Scientific Reports.

The freshwater is crucial, especially as the Great Salt Lake continues to shrink due to drought and excessive water use. This decline has exposed around 800 square miles of lakebed, turning it into a major source of dust pollution affecting nearby Utah communities.

Bill Johnson, a hydrologist and co-author of the study, expressed surprise at the extent of the freshwater. “We found that it reaches deeper into the lake than we expected,” he noted. This hidden water could help manage dust levels by saturating the dry lakebed.

Research indicates that understanding and managing this freshwater resource could have positive effects. Johnson emphasizes the need for caution: “We want to explore ways to use this water to control dust without disrupting the ecosystem.”

The team plans to conduct a broader survey, covering the entire 1,500-square-mile lake area, to gauge the overall freshwater volume.
