Dr. Philipp Brandl, a marine geologist, expressed his surprise: “We have a hot vent bubbling right next to a cool gas seep. No one expected this.”

This site, known as Conical Seamount, benefits from special geological conditions where magma heats the seafloor. This heat not only generates hot mineral-rich fluids but also forms methane gas. Initial research had hinted at some hydrothermal activity, but only the use of the ROV Kiel 6000—a remotely operated vehicle—revealed the full extent of this treasure.

One of the most intriguing aspects of this find is the vibrant life surrounding these vents. Deep-sea creatures like mussels, shrimp, and colorful sea cucumbers thrive in this harsh environment. Dr. Brandl noted the density of life, stating that the area is so packed that “you couldn’t see a single patch of rock.” Many species here may even be undiscovered, indicating a richly diverse ecosystem.

The geological significance of the site is equally compelling. The Karambusel field is located on organic material-laden sediments, where rising magma creates distinct chemical conditions. These conditions influence both the ecosystem and the geology, resulting in the deposition of valuable elements like gold and silver, as well as toxic substances such as arsenic.

However, this remarkable ecosystem is facing serious threats from human activity. Mining operations on Lihir Island are releasing waste into the nearby waters, endangering the delicate balance of this new habitat. Moreover, exploration licenses for seabed minerals pose additional risks.

Dr. Brandl emphasizes the need for conservation: “We have discovered an unexpected treasure trove of biodiversity that must be protected.” As interest in deep-sea mining grows, related studies suggest that many underwater ecosystems are at risk. Research shows that human activities can drastically alter marine environments, significantly reducing biodiversity.

To protect the Karambusel field, scientists call for rigorous environmental protections and targeted marine planning. More research is crucial to fully understand this unique ecosystem.
