Mongolia is one of the least populated countries on Earth. Once you leave Ulaanbaatar, you find vast stretches of empty land. This emptiness explains how large dinosaur footprints, up to 70 centimeters long, could disappear from our records. Researchers recently rediscovered the Saizhurakh area in northern Mongolia, a place that had been overlooked for decades. This area now offers insights into a time when dinosaurs roamed the Earth—around 120 million years ago.
The importance of this discovery goes beyond just the giant prints left in ancient mud. Until now, evidence of large dinosaurs was primarily found in China, Japan, and South Korea during the early Cretaceous period. Mongolia and eastern Russia had always seemed like a gap in our understanding. One theory suggested that harsh winters and other extreme conditions kept these giants away. However, these newly found tracks challenge that idea.
The prints were laid down in the Shinekhudag Formation, a geological layer that formed on the bottom of an ancient lake. About 120 million years ago, fluctuating water levels created mud flats where dinosaurs walked, possibly in search of water. The mud then hardened around their footprints, preserving them through time.
The site itself was previously mentioned in a 1950 report, but the details were too vague for researchers to find it again until now. When they revisited, they were surprised to discover 31 prints across two different types of trackways. This indicates various dinosaur species once roamed this area.
One set of prints belonged to sauropods, long-necked herbivores stretching over 15 meters (about 49 feet). It appears that two of these giants walked closely together, reminiscent of how elephants often move in single file.
The conditions that preserve these tracks don’t always coincide with where you find bones. However, researchers noticed sand layers nearby that may hold bones or teeth from the very dinosaurs that left these footprints—a significant potential find.
Among the prints, scientists noted signs of five theropods, carnivorous dinosaurs estimated to be between 7.4 and 8.8 meters (about 24 to 29 feet) long. One had a 57-centimeter-long footprint. Only one trackway is clearly defined, but the presence of multiple large predators in one area raises intriguing questions. Ecosystems typically can’t support many large carnivores coexisting. The tracks suggest these creatures were not coordinating their movements, leading researchers to wonder if a rich food source drew them there independently.
Interestingly, during the same early Cretaceous period, North America had well-documented large theropods. Dinosaurs regularly migrated between Asia and North America, so the idea of theropods being present in Mongolia is plausible—even if it wasn’t confirmed until now.
