The U.S. has announced a new initiative aimed at stabilizing Gaza, named the “Board of Peace.” This board, led by former President Trump, includes notable figures like U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and former UK Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair. The aim is to oversee Gaza during its recovery from ongoing conflicts and implement Trump’s 20-point plan to achieve peace between Israel and Hamas.
Additional board members include World Bank chief Ajay Banga and private equity leader Marc Rowan. Each brings expertise to help rebuild Gaza. Their portfolios will focus on ensuring stability and positive growth in the region.
Tony Blair, who served as UK Prime Minister from 1997 to 2007, is also recognized for his controversial role in the Iraq War. His experience as a former Middle East envoy may influence the board’s strategies. Blair’s involvement signifies a blend of political and economic knowledge, essential for the challenges ahead.
In tandem, Palestinians have set up their committee, known as the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG). This 15-member group is expected to manage daily governance in post-war Gaza, led by Ali Shaath, a former Palestinian Authority minister. Nickolay Mladenov, a Bulgarian politician and previous UN envoy, will represent the board in Gaza, collaborating with NCAG.
Despite the board’s formation, the situation remains tense. Since the ceasefire in October, there have been ongoing breaches, with both sides accusing each other. Reports indicate that around 450 Palestinians have died from Israeli strikes and three Israeli soldiers were killed by Palestinian groups during this time. The humanitarian situation in Gaza is grave, with the UN stressing the need for essential supplies.
Looking back, the war was sparked by a Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. This assault resulted in numerous casualties and hostages, escalating tensions. Since then, over 71,260 individuals in Gaza have lost their lives due to Israeli attacks, according to local health sources.
