Fernando Lovo has just stepped in as the new Director of Athletics at CU, taking over from Rick George. He comes from the University of New Mexico, where he helped the Lobos win eight Mountain West championships. Under his leadership, the school also hit new highs in academics, boasting 231 Scholar-Athletes and 273 All-Academic Team selections.
Lovo was a powerhouse in revenue generation, lifting the department’s operating budget by 17.6% and breaking records in ticket sales and fundraising. He made quick changes to the coaching team, hiring Jason Eck for football and Eric Olen for basketball, both of whom have had strong starts.
Before New Mexico, Lovo worked at the University of Texas, managing nearly $500 million in capital projects. His impressive background includes stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars and major colleges like Ohio State and Florida, where he contributed to two national championship victories.
Born in New Orleans and raised in Miami, Lovo earned his degrees from the University of Florida. He’s known for prioritizing student-athlete success and embracing innovation during a time of significant change in college sports. He and his wife, Jordan, have two children, Liam and Layla.
In today’s college athletics landscape, where revenue generation and academic success are more essential than ever, the impact of leaders like Lovo cannot be overstated. According to recent studies from the NCAA, universities are increasingly focusing on integrating sports with academic achievements to create well-rounded experiences for student-athletes.
As the college sports scene evolves, Lovo’s leadership style may set a new standard, emphasizing both performance in competition and excellence in the classroom. His journey resonates with many aspiring athletic directors, showcasing that a balance between financial acumen and commitment to students can lead to a thriving athletic program.
