The BMW M2 CS is making waves as a high-performance coupe. Just over a month after its reveal, it set a new lap record at the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife. On April 11, 2025, the M2 CS completed the demanding 12.94-mile course in an impressive 7:25.5. This beat the previous record by eight seconds, previously held by the Audi RS3.
The new record was achieved by BMW M development engineer Jörg Weidinger, who had set the last best time for the M2 just a year earlier. BMW M’s boss, Franciscus van Meel, called this achievement a “significant milestone” for the brand.
Under the hood, the M2 CS is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six engine. It cranks out 523 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. Despite its heft at 3,770 pounds, it zips from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds and can hit a top speed of 188 mph.
While the absence of a manual transmission might disappoint some fans, it hasn’t hurt demand. BMW reports a surge in interest for the M2 CS, especially in the U.S. This strong demand has led the company to increase its allocation of the model in various markets.
However, the price tag is steep. Starting at $99,775, it sits on the higher end of the coupe market. But for buyers, the thrill of owning one of the fastest compact coupes around is a strong selling point.
Interestingly, this surge in demand reflects a broader trend in luxury performance cars, where buyers are eager for speed and technology. A recent study from J.D. Power found that high-performance vehicles have seen an increase in sales, particularly among younger demographics, who are drawn to both the driving experience and brand prestige.
As the automotive industry shifts towards electric vehicles, the M2 CS stands as a testament to the excitement of internal combustion engine performance—at least for now. Experts agree that while electric models are the future, there will always be enthusiasts who crave the thrill of a gas-powered engine.
