In Nagasaki, Japan, bobtail cats are more than just pets; they’re seen as symbols of good luck. Locally known as "omagari neko" or "kagi neko," these unique cats have curved or hooked tails, making them easily recognizable. They have a dedicated following and even a Shinto shrine in their honor.

Kazuya Hideshima, who works at the Omagari Neko Shrine, explains that the bobtail cats are cherished in the region. Historically, about 80% of the cats in Nagasaki are bobtails—far more common here than anywhere else in Japan.

The story of these cats goes back to the 6th century when they came from China with Buddhist monks. Initially, their role was clear: to protect important religious texts from rodents. Interestingly, during Japan’s closed period in the 17th to 19th centuries, Nagasaki was unique as the only foreign trading port. This isolation allowed the bobtails to thrive, as they were brought in to control pests on trade ships.

Veterinarian Soshin Yamamoto suggests that the high number of bobtails in Nagasaki is due to a genetic mutation that took hold in this sheltered environment. He notes that, fortunately, these cats can live fulfilling lives, especially around humans, without issues related to their tail structure.

Residents of Nagasaki welcome tourists who come to see these charming cats, viewing them as a boon for local businesses. Recently, visitors have expressed curiosity about the bobtails. Natsuno Kani, a tourist from Tokyo, shared that she was excited to learn more about these famous cats. In contrast, Abigail Tarraso, an artist from Spain, had never encountered bobtails before her trip. "This is my first time hearing about them," she said, eagerly anticipating spotting some during her visit.

Social media often buzzes with images and stories of Nagasaki’s bobtail cats, showcasing their playful nature and unique charm. This growing online presence further amplifies their popularity among cat lovers worldwide.
