Discover the Magic of ‘Come From Away’ at Scotch College: A Captivating Musical Theatre Review

Come From Away is a powerful musical that deeply resonates with audiences. Every time I experience it, I find something new to admire. This latest rendition by OSMaD showcases a talented cast, skilled musicians, and stunning set design that blend together seamlessly.

The story takes place in Newfoundland after the September 11, 2001 attacks. For the first time, American airspace was closed, forcing 38 planes with 6,579 passengers from 92 countries to land in Gander, a small town with just 9,651 residents and only four traffic lights. The locals, under the leadership of their mayor, quickly rose to the occasion, offering warmth and support to those unexpectedly stranded.

Passengers landed unaware of the tragic events unfolding. Panic and worry set in as they learned they couldn’t leave for days. However, the kindness from Gander’s residents offered them comfort during a chaotic time. This unlikely haven formed bonds that travelers would carry in their hearts forever.

While tension and fear were present, the overwhelming goodwill from the locals shone brighter. Relationships were built in a matter of days, proving the power of human connection in crisis. The term “Come From Aways” refers to newcomers to Newfoundland, and Canadian writers Irene Sankoff and David Hein drew inspiration from real experiences, interviewing residents and travelers alike after the events of 2001.

Premiering on Broadway in 2017, Come From Away received a Tony Award for Best Direction and is celebrated for its heartfelt narrative and catchy songs. The musical reflects a significant moment in history, showcasing resilience and community spirit in adversity. A recent survey by the Pew Research Center found that 63% of Americans feel that community bonds have strengthened due to recent crises, echoing the sentiments expressed in the musical.

The OSMaD cast shines, with performers taking on multiple roles. Marina Martin stands out as the first female captain of an American Airlines flight, displaying both authority and empathy. Kat Desmler shines as a local reporter with infectious enthusiasm. Each actor adds depth, making the experience unforgettable.

The set design, crafted by Merinda Gallagher, powerfully evokes the emotions of that time. It includes elements that reference the tragic events of 9/11, reminding audiences of the gravity of the situation while celebrating the hope that emerged from it. With impactful sound design by Marcello Lo Ricco and brilliant lighting by David Brown, the production creates an immersive experience that captivates all who attend.

Director and choreographer Daragh Wills expertly weaves together the heartache and inspiration in this tale. OSMaD’s Come From Away has certainly left a mark, sharing the message that kindness can rise even during the darkest moments. Catch it at Scotch College until December 13, 2025.
