“Punctum” isn’t just a term for punctuation; it’s a new type of cosmic object that scientists are buzzing about. In a recent interview with Gizmodo, Elena Shablovinskaya, a radio astronomer from Chile’s Universidad Diego Portales and the Max Planck Institute in Germany, shared insights about this extraordinary finding.
Shablovinskaya and her team were observing the spiral galaxy NGC 4945, located about 11 million light years away in the Centaurus constellation. They switched the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) radio telescope to polarized light and were shocked to see a bright dot that outshined everything else, including the galaxy’s central black hole.
“It’s astonishingly bright,” she explained. Punctum can be up to 100,000 times more luminous than typical magnetars, and even brighter than many supernovae. This makes it stand out in ways that confused researchers initially. “Everything else disappeared, and only this little dot remained,” Shablovinskaya said.
Initially, Punctum’s existence seemed like a fluke. But follow-up observations showed it remained visible two weeks later, indicating it wasn’t a dying star or just an optical illusion. Instead, it appeared to be “hiding in plain sight,” only discernible in specific wavelengths.
Shablovinskaya and her team compared Punctum to various extreme cosmic objects but found no matches. It was particularly visible in millimeter wavelengths, yet elusive in X-ray or radio observations. This mystery adds to the excitement surrounding its discovery.
As for the future, Shablovinskaya plans to investigate its unique polarization, which could reveal more about its magnetic environment. She believes understanding Punctum might help connect it to known cosmic phenomena.
This discovery highlights how much we still have to learn about the universe. As Shablovinskaya put it, “Astronomy is far from finished; we’re just beginning to discover the full variety of cosmic objects out there.”
