Even more intriguing is its atmosphere, which is mostly made up of helium and carbon. “We expected to find common molecules like water and methane, but instead, we found molecular carbon,” said Michael Zhang from the University of Chicago. This surprising composition leaves researchers puzzled. “It’s challenging to figure out how this planet could have such a carbon-rich atmosphere. It seems to go against everything we know about planetary formation,” Zhang added.
Experts note that our understanding of exoplanets is still evolving. A study by the American Astronomical Society found that roughly 5,000 exoplanets have been confirmed, but many present unique challenges that defy our current models. The discovery of PSR J2322-2650b adds to this growing list of mysteries.
