Indian Railways is launching the Amrit Bharat II Express trains, set to begin in January 2026. This new train service aims to provide affordable and safe travel across states, featuring modern amenities for passengers.
The fare structure for these trains includes a minimum travel distance of 200 km for Sleeper class tickets and 50 km for Second class tickets. The basic fares remain unchanged from the earlier Amrit Bharat Express, costing Rs 149 for Sleeper class for trips up to 200 km and Rs 36 for Second class up to 50 km. The Railway Board confirmed that additional charges, like reservation fees, will apply.
Changes in ticketing rules include the removal of RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) for Sleeper class, while unreserved tickets for Second class will still be available. There will be three specific quotas in Sleeper class: Ladies, Persons with Disabilities, and Senior Citizens. No other reservation quotas are allowed for this service.
For Lower berth allocation, children traveling without a separate berth will be prioritized for lower berths. The same applies to male passengers aged over 60 and female passengers over 45, based on seat availability.
In terms of refunds, the new policy mandates that cancellations can be processed within 24 hours. All transactions should ideally be digital. If passengers buy tickets at the ticket counter using cash, regular refund terms will still apply.
Historically, train fares have often been a topic of debate in India. Recent studies show that the public values both affordable travel options and the comforts associated with modern train services. According to a report from the Indian Ministry of Railways, nearly 23 million passengers travel by train daily, highlighting the necessity for efficient and cost-effective solutions.
