Discover the New Indian Army Homestay in Garbyang Village, Pithoragarh: A Gateway to Adventure and Local Culture

Pithoragarh: Hidden along scenic paths to Adi Kailash and Kailash Mansarovar, Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand recently launched an inviting homestay, thanks to the Indian Army in Dharachula. This initiative is attracting both tourists and pilgrims, all eager to experience the beauty of the area. The nearby Kalapani region adds to the charm, aiming to boost tourism and support local communities.

Garbyang village, once dubbed “Mini Europe,” thrived as a hub for Indo-China trade before the 1962 India-China war. Due to its rich history, the Indian Army has introduced tent-based homestays here under Operation Sadbhavana, aligned with the Government of India’s Vibrant Village Programme. This is all about enhancing tourism and uplifting the local economy.

During the British era, Garbyang was celebrated for its stunning landscapes. Sadly, many families have moved away in search of better prospects, leading to a quiet village that’s eager for revival.

The homestay is managed by the Garbyang Village Committee, giving locals new job opportunities. It offers a cozy stay for just ₹1,000 per person per night, meals included.

Tourism is vital for many villages in this region. The Army’s homestay is expected to draw more visitors. Local residents not only benefit economically but also play a key role in keeping the area secure. They lend a helping hand to the Army, acting as an important link to the outside world.

The initiative was inaugurated by Lieutenant General DG Mishra, highlighting its importance. Garbyang, surrounded by majestic mountains and serene valleys, serves as a starting point for pilgrims heading to Adi Kailash and Om Parvat.

To reach Garbyang village, you can travel by road from Pithoragarh, moving towards Dharachula. You have to cover about 94 kilometers first and then continue on the Tawaghat–Garbyang road for another 60-65 kilometers. If you’re flying, Naini Saini Airport is the nearest; after landing, taxis and jeeps are available for the next leg of the journey. The closest railway station is Tanakpur, about 240 kilometers away, from where you can drive to Garbyang.

This unique initiative highlights the Indian Army’s commitment to community development while stirring interest among tourists. As travel trends shift towards more immersive experiences, Garbyang’s homestay could pave the way for further opportunities in eco-tourism and local engagement.
