Indian Railways is launching a new train, the Amrit Bharat Express, connecting New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal and Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu. This train will enhance travel between these states, making it easier for passengers, especially those from lower-income backgrounds, to afford train journeys.
The train, number 20609, will travel from New Jalpaiguri to Tiruchirappalli, while the return train, number 20610, will follow the same route. It’ll stop at 38 stations, including notable places like Malda Town, Kharagpur, and Vishakhapatnam. Each journey spans over 1,500 km and takes about 47 hours.
This service will run weekly, with the New Jalpaiguri train departing every Friday at 4:45 PM and reaching Tiruchirappalli by Sunday at 4:15 PM. In the reverse direction, the train leaves Tiruchirappalli every Wednesday at 5:45 AM, arriving in New Jalpaiguri by Friday at 5:00 AM.
Experts suggest this initiative could greatly increase accessibility for rural populations, who often rely on rail for transport. According to a recent survey, around 30% of the Indian population frequently travels by train, highlighting the importance of affordable options.
The train’s 22 coaches will provide sufficient seating for the expected influx of passengers. With the recent push to improve Indian rail infrastructure, this service is a significant step in bridging inter-state travel gaps.
