Student Kiera Kanoa-Faalafua shared her excitement: “The Welcome Center helps my well-being by providing spaces to study, connect, or just take a breather. It truly feels like a supportive community for my mental, physical, and academic needs.” Another student, Kevin Likiak, emphasized its role in introducing peers to helpful programs, such as First-Year Experience and support for Native Hawaiian students.
The Welcome Center honors John Morton, a former Vice President of the University of Hawaiʻi, who dedicated himself to the improvement of community colleges. This center symbolizes his legacy and the college’s commitment to its students.
During the opening, the generous contributions of donors Lester and Marian Kaneta to the Lunalilo Scholars Program were highlighted. This program helps students who may not initially consider college find a path to education. LaVaché Scanlan, the program director, expressed that the center represents an assurance of belonging. “We want every person who steps onto this campus to feel connected and supported as they pursue their goals,” she explained.
