Pembroke Hall Reopens at Brown University

Pembroke Hall at Brown University has officially reopened after a major renovation. This building is now the home of the Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women. The upgrades bring together various programs, including undergraduate and graduate studies in gender and sexuality and the Pembroke Seminar.

Center director Leela Gandhi describes the reopening as a “homecoming.” She believes that having everything in one building will encourage collaboration among faculty and staff. “We can easily share ideas now,” she says. This new proximity is expected to spark growth and innovation at the center.

The renovation was made possible by a generous gift from Shauna M. Stark, a member of the Class of 1976. The Tudor Revival-style building has been modernized while keeping its historic charm. Pembroke Hall was initially built in 1897 as part of the Women’s College, which later merged with Brown’s men’s college in 1971.

Gandhi highlights the hall’s significance: it was funded entirely by women, symbolizing their enduring legacy at Brown. The renovations created a kitchen and lounge, an exhibition space, and upgraded the multipurpose room for events, with new tech for better presentations.

Historically, Pembroke Hall served as a vital space for women in education. As we continue to engage in dialogues about gender equality, its reopening is a celebration of that legacy. According to a recent survey by the American Association of University Women, progress in gender equality in education is steady but slow. Spaces like Pembroke Hall play an essential role in fostering discussions and research on these critical issues.

As Pembroke Hall begins this new chapter, it stands not only as a functional space but as a reminder of the strides women have made in academia and beyond.
