The San Diego Food Bank has a new home in Vista. This 60,000-square-foot facility promises to help meet the growing need for food support in North County. After years in leased spaces, the move marks a significant shift for the organization.
On January 9, community leaders and Food Bank staff celebrated the official opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at their new location on Oak Ridge Way. This new facility replaces a rented warehouse, and by owning their space, the Food Bank plans to save around $400,000 each year. That money will go directly into food programs and services for those in need.
Casey Castillo, the CEO of the San Diego Food Bank, pointed out how critical this investment is. “This is a transformational moment for our organization,” he noted. The new building was made possible by a generous donor. It will ensure that the Food Bank can continue to serve North County effectively, especially during times of increased demand.
Vista Mayor John Franklin highlighted how the facility shows the Food Bank’s dedication to the community. “This permanent facility ensures that local families have access to critical services for generations to come,” he said.
Since incorporating the North County Food Bank in 2015, food distribution has skyrocketed. In just a few years, the amount handled has jumped from 500,000 pounds to over 9.2 million pounds annually. Together with the Miramar warehouse, the Food Bank distributes nearly 14 million pounds of food every year across North County.
The new Vista facility offers several upgrades. There’s more refrigeration and freezer space, allowing for greater storage of fresh produce, dairy, and proteins. The facility also features a larger Client Choice Pantry, letting families choose food items that suit their needs. Additionally, it includes a Diaper Bank and space for partner nonprofits to provide services.
Experts are emphasizing the increasing importance of such food banks. A recent study from Feeding America reveals that food insecurity affects over 38 million Americans. This makes facilities like San Diego’s Food Bank crucial in addressing local needs.
The opening of the new facility embodies a vital step toward fighting food insecurity in North County, promising a brighter future for countless families in the region. The Food Bank’s permanent space solidifies its role as a key support system in the community.
