Discover the Power of Emerging Talent: Indigenous Voices and Climate Awareness at Vernon Gallery

The Vernon Public Art Gallery is buzzing with excitement this month! From May 22 to July 17, three unique exhibitions will showcase the creativity of local artists.

Emergence features work by graduating students from UBC Okanagan’s fine arts programs. This annual exhibit has been a highlight since 2009, showcasing fresh talent. This year, six artists will display their work in various mediums—painting, photography, sculpture, digital media, and installation. Their themes dive into relevant issues like consumerism, grief, and ecological concerns.

For example, Faith Bye uses everyday objects in her sculptures to express loss, while Amy Bugera critiques consumer culture through her prints. Fredrik Thacker offers bold takes on queer desire, drawing on influences from contemporary media.

Lastly, Gathered celebrates the talents of Indigenous students across School District 22. The exhibition showcases a variety of media, blending traditional knowledge with modern themes. From elementary to high school students, their artwork expresses identity and community, and how Indigenous art is evolving today.

An opening reception for Emergence and Smoky Summers happens on May 22, from 6 to 8 p.m., and is free to all. The reception for Gathered will take place on May 24, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with remarks at noon.
