Celebrating Excellence: Slippery Rock’s Honorees in PSAC’s Greatest Female Athletes List
Lock Haven, Pa. – In a nod to its 75th anniversary, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) unveiled the “75 Greatest Female Athletes” list, featuring six remarkable figures from Slippery Rock University (SRU). This initiative highlights outstanding student-athletes who have made their mark in the PSAC.
The PSAC is celebrating its milestone by releasing different lists each Wednesday for the month of September. Initially, they honored athletes who went on to successful careers outside sports. Now, they focus on those who excelled in sports during their collegiate years.
The latest list includes four SRU alumnae and two others associated with the university. Here’s a look at these remarkable athletes:
Karyn McCready (Track & Field, 2000-04)
Karyn was a standout in the javelin, earning three All-American titles and winning the national championship in 2004. She even competed in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. With three PSAC titles to her name, Karyn was recognized as a two-time Academic All-American and joined the Rock Athletics Hall of Fame in 2022.
Meghan McGrath (Soccer, 2003-07)
Meghan shone during her time at SRU, receiving four All-PSAC honors and two All-American awards. She played a crucial role in leading the women’s soccer team to four tournament appearances, including two conference titles. Meghan ranks among the all-time leaders at SRU for points, goals, and assists and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2017.
Julie Morrow Caito (Gymnastics, 1981-85)
Julie made history by being Slippery Rock’s first NCAA national champion in women’s gymnastics, winning the balance beam title in 1985. Known for her impressive performances, she graduated with five All-American accolades and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1996.
Andi Rose (Track & Field, 2003-07)
Regarded as SRU’s best hurdler, Andi closed her college career with six All-American titles and 14 PSAC championships. Her accolades include multiple titles in both indoor and outdoor championships. Andi’s contributions earned her a spot in the Hall of Fame in 2018.
Becky Siembak (Basketball, 1999-00)
Becky had a memorable freshman year at SRU, helping the team win 23 games. She earned first-team All-PSAC honors, later transferring to California (Pa.) where she assisted in winning a national title.
Tabitha Bemis (Track & Field, Edinboro)
Though she began her career at Edinboro, Tabitha has made her mark at SRU as a coach since 2015. A six-time All-American, she holds the record for the most PSAC Top 10 honors in history and was celebrated as the PSAC Women’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
These athletes demonstrate the spirit and talent that the PSAC has fostered over 75 years. Their stories not only reflect individual achievements but also inspire future generations in collegiate athletics.
